Interview with a Cosplayer- Missa Zane

Sorry for the delay everyone this week has been a bit busy to say the least, but we’re back with a vengeance with our first of two lovely Cosplayers! And once again we’re back in Utah which is becoming a thriving nerd haven I must say. Proving this point once again is the super hot Missa Zane. When she’s not creating Cosplay works of art, and Cosplaying for charity she’s deep in the nerd trenches collecting comics, gaming and watching right along with you. It’s our pleasure to present to you Missa Zane!

What is your take on the Cosplay scene like in Utah?

It’s VERY active and prolific. UT is kind of a geek haven. I’ve not seen a state so immersed and active in cosplay. There are numerous charity cosplay groups and cons every 2 weeks-3 months max 😊

What got you into the art of Cosplay?

I attended Anime Banzai in 2010 and never looked back 😊

Who are your favorite characters to Cosplay?

Catwoman (Jim Balent version), Harley Quinn (classic Batman the Animated Series), and Joy (Inside Out)

Can you tell me what it took to make this particular design? (Time, cost, materials, etc)

Of the above 3, Joy is the one I put the most time/effort into. It took over 10 hours just to drawn the designs on the dress (not counting research.) it took me hours of online searching and months of browsing 20+ thrift stores across 3 states (I looked while traveling) to find the perfect dress (I’m not yet skilled enough to make my own.) The dress coat about $10 and the sleeves had to be altered (a friend helped me.) I had to return my first wig to find the perfect color then spent about 2 hours planning and researching. I paid about $15 to get it trimmed so the bangs would hang right then I spent about 2 hours styling it myself. I paid about $10 for hair gel and glitter.

Who/What is your biggest inspiration?

Wow, I have SO many cosplay idols… I guess I’d have to say Garnet Runestar.

What are the Biggest cons in Utah right now?

Salt Lake Comic Con and Anime Banzai.

Which one is your favorite?

I love SLCC because it is huge and Anime Banzai because it is not 😊 I work a booth at SLCC and relax and play at Anime Banzai.

What Anime are you currently watching?

I am currently watching Castlevania and rewatching Kiki’s Delivery Service (I’ll be a Kiki Bunny at the Dragon Con Bunny Hutch Party)

What are you currently playing?

I am currently playing Zelda: Breath of the Wild on Nintendo Switch and Oxenfree in iOS

What are you reading at the moment?

I am currently reading Dawn of Wonder by Jonathan Renshaw

What is your favorite cosplay moment?

When a child gets excited to see me and says I am their favorite 😊

What is your cosplay horror story?

I have been very fortunate to be able to surround myself with positive people and safe environments so I have had very few (and all minor) “horror stories”
I guess the worst would be when I forgot my Harley Quinn eye mask 😭 I felt naked!

Where do you see the art of Cosplay in the next 5-10 years?

I think the novelty and popularity will level off but the quality will continue to grow.WR
