Interview with a Cosplayer is here once again with a sibling tandem of Cosplay excellence! Meet Arisa of Ezarath Designs, She along with her Brother Damian make one hell of a Cosplay combo! There is no sibling rivalry to be had here these two could easily forge a path on their own but it’s the fact that they not only team up but team up well that makes them strong. Let’s give the stunning Ms Arisa her time in the spotlight!
What is the Cosplay scene like in where you live?
We live in New Jersey and we think that the cosplay scene is pretty average! We don’t know a whole lot of cosplayers from NJ, just a few, and there’s aren’t too many conventions that happen here. We’d say it’s a bit quiet.
What got you into the art of Cosplay?
We’ve always been into dress up when we were kids so it only made sense for us to try something like cosplay. Damien was actually the one to suggest it when we attended a local Philadelphia con three years ago. We had just gotten into Attack on Titan and he thought it would be cool for our group of friends to get together and try out the costumes. It sort of just grew from there!
Who are your favorite characters to Cosplay?
That’s a tough choice but I think I’d have to say Kenshin and Sanosuke! It was our first official costume duo we did together and it’s the comfiest costume either of us own. We always get such a good reception when we’re wearing those costumes too!
Can you tell me what it took to make this
particular design? (Time, cost, materials, etc)
The cosplay that I’m the most proud of would have to be my Edward Elric costume! I made the automail entirely myself and I also made a spear, even though I haven’t gotten a chance to debut it at a convention yet. It took me three weeks to create my automail entirely out of craft foam and worbla and I’ve remade it twice since then, improving each time. I learned all new techniques when it came to crafting the arm and spear so I’m proud of that costume the most. Damien’s costume that he’s most proud of is his Snake costume. He also created the arm from scratch and styled the wig and beard himself. He purchased and weathered all parts of it accordingly, making sure to pay attention to every detail as he went. The costume took him about a month to put together and he’s very proud of it.
Who/What is your biggest inspiration?
I think our biggest inspirations are each other. I’d like to say that I’m inspired by cosplayers like Riddle Cosplay and Stellachu (which I am) but I love seeing Damien learn and grown and strive to want to do more with his cosplay that it inspires me to do the same. We keep each other grounded but we also keep each other inspired and full of ambition.
What are the Biggest cons in (where you live) right now?
In NJ, I’d have to say the biggest convention is AnimeNEXT, which happened this past June! It was a lot of fun and it took place in Atlantic City so it wasn’t a long drive for us at all!
Which one is your favorite?
Our favorite NJ con would have to be AnimeNEXT but our favorite convention ever is definitely Katsucon. It takes the cake every year and our memories from there are endless. We always have a great time there.
What are you in to right now?
I’m currently watching a few anime : Voltron, Death Note, and Ajin! I’m playing Destiny 2 and The Evil Within while Damien is playing Metal Gear Solid 3! I’m not currently reading anything but I do plan on restarting the Maximum Ride series! I think Damien is reading Pax Romana?
What is your favorite cosplay moment?
Our favorite cosplay moment would probably have to be the first time that we debuted our Rurouni Kenshin costumes. We wore them to Sakura Matsuri in Brooklyn and we didn’t think that we were going to get a huge reception but man, we were wrong! So many people loved the costumes and I even met a photographer there who is one of my favorites to work with now! It was just an awesome experience for the both of us. We still talk about it to this day!
What is your cosplay horror story?
I think a cosplay horror story for us would have to be Otakon 2016! It was our third year attending Otakon and we had an absolutely horrible hotel experience starting off that we had to get switched to a hotel across the street because we refused to stay there another night! It was also unbelievably hot and my automail melted from the heat. I also broke my spear head before debuting it and the heat had our costumes drenched in sweat. It was just an awful time, haha!
Where do you see the art of Cosplay in the next 5-10 years?
We see cosplay continuing to evolve and grow into something more widely accepted and mainstream. There’s so many people that don’t know what cosplay is and I hope that changes because it’s such a fun hobby and a great outlet for creativity.WR
