What is the Cosplay scene like in Salt Lake City?
I live in Salt Lake City and it seems like the Cosplay scene has really grown in the last few years. We have a pretty inclusive, kind group here, where anyone can cosplay and be who they want to be. We even have a Cosplay Karaoke night a couple times a month as well as many active Cosplay charity groups.
What got you into the art of Cosplay?
Initially I began as most people do, at Halloween. I have always been a bit of a geek for video games, D&D, tabletop games and Comic books. So I would create these over the top costumes at Halloween time. About 10 years ago I went to my first con and I have never looked back.
Who are your favorite characters to Cosplay?
That’s a difficult question. It’s a toss up between Xena and Wonder Woman. Both powerful women, who overcome great challenges. I feel strong, capable and beautiful in those cosplays.
Can you tell me what it took to make this particular design? (Time, cost, materials, etc)
It took me about a year to put together my Xena cosplay. I used combination of Worbla, Apoxy Sculpt, faux leather, real leather, Sintra. I would guess I spent around $300 on materials and at least 300 hours..
Who/What is your biggest inspiration?
Currently Dragon Con is my biggest inspiration. Every year I go, I am blown away at the sheer amount of talent that comes. It inspires me to up my game and improve my skills every year.
What are the Biggest cons in Salt Lake City right now?
Salt Lake Comic Con/Fanx is pretty much the biggest con here. We also have Gaming Con and Wizarding Days. I pray for the day that Fantasy Con returns.
Which one is your favorite?
Fantasy Con was my fav.
What is your favorite cosplay moment?
I loved it when I debuted my Glinda the Good Witch at Dragon Con. That was EPIC! Though meeting George Perez in my Wonder Woman cosplay was also top!
What is your cosplay horror story?
I once helped coordinate volunteers for a cosplay contest and that pretty much turned me off from ever entering one. I cannot imagine standing around all day in massive cosplays for one.
Where do you see the art of Cosplay in the next 5-10 years?
Its a hobby for me and will likely stay that way. I’d like to continue working on amazing things, attending Dragon Con and doing Charity work with my Cosplay Charity group Heroic.WR
