Interview with a Cosplayer- Nerdee

Fall is now upon us, so that means it’s time to turn up the heat with another Cosplay Beauty!!! Here we have Nerdee, another very skilled and very tantalizing Midwest Baby. At first glance the word Rrrrrrrowwww immediately comes to mind. She’s very hands on and very dedicated to her craft, and with designs that range from awwww to NSFW Nerdee definitely has the goods to have droves of fanboys eating from her luscious palms. Let’s stand in awe while Nerdee drops the Mic!!!

What is the Cosplay scene like where you live?

Very Family oriented, I live in the Midwest and attend many conventions up here. I have noticed it is family oriented  Though it makes sense since the elder nerds (myself included) are mostly married with children and we are passing that down to our children.

What got you into the art of Cosplay?

When I was a child, around 6 or 7 my grandmother made me a costume of Kiki from Kiki’s Delivery Service for a local comic book store event, back then we didnt know it was called Cosplay BUT after learning more of it it was a blackhole and continues to be!

Who are your favorite characters to Cosplay?

Spider Gwen

Hard choice. I have tons of favorites but I will only list a few of them: Spider Gwen – Spiderverse, Bill Cypher, Humanoid – Gravity Falls, Reverse Dipper – Reverse Gravity Falls, Malon – Legend of Zelda

Can you tell me what it took to make a particular design? (Time, cost, materials, etc)

Spider Gwen – The suit was a sponsored product for one of my sponsorships, wig cost me $30 and I had to cut it and style it- style and cut time was around 2 hours, Shoes were around $20 (hard to find that right blue tone honestly)
Bill Cypher – Pants were store bought at $20, Coat was an altered old Snape coat that cost around $75, fabric, ribbons, crafting foam was around $50, Time spent on it altering coat, adding fabric, ribbons, and crafting buttons from foam, hand paint all the design, styling wig and crafting hat and props (Cane, eye patch, handheld dimensional portal) was about 50 hours over the span of 2 weeks Reverse Dipper(I also made reverse Mabel at the same time) – Pants same as Bills, Fabric for cloak I had from past cosplays, shirts were free from an old work place, Materials I bought were fabric dye $10, Fabric Paint $15 worth, Wig $15. I styled the wig for both Mabel and Dipper aver a period of 2 days, the shirts were hand dyed by me over period of 3 days to get right tone, cloak for dipper, head band for Mabel took me nearly a month to complete the Galaxy print was HAND painted with fabric paint, layering each color over and over to get right tone. The amulets were hand made with material I already had and took me an hour to make both.Hand painted Mabels shoes over 2 days. Malon- Fabric for skirt and apron was $25, Paint was $10 for details, Wig cost around $35 (I think) Clay for the brooch was $10,shirt to alter $5. TIme it took to make it all was 30 hours over a week

Who/What is your biggest inspiration?Nerdee

Meg Turney – I love her attitude to the “haters” and her strive to be what she wants to be.
Kamui Cosplay – Her skills, attitude and just her. She is amazing!

What are the Biggest cons right now?

Anime Iowa is the largest convention in my State but around us we have conventions such as AnimeMidwest, ACEN, Wizard World Chicago and a few other larger ones.

Which one is your favorite?

Honestly I love small conventions now days. So my FAVORITE convention is Ramencon in Indiana

What are you in to right now?

I am watching Little Witch Academia, can not say no to cute characters that are witches! Well at this second Minecraft on my families personal server BUT usually GTA4, Slime Rancher or 7 Days To Die.Comic wise- rereading Doctor Strange and Spiderman, Book wise – Rereading Monster Hunter series by Larry Correnia.

What is your favorite cosplay moment?

Has to be a 2 way tie: First time cosplaying Sakura from Naruto and a mother saw my group when we were eatting lunch at the mall nearby in cosplay and the mother got excited and she came up to us and asked us if we would be willing to meet her children and her at a certain time. Come find out her children ADORED Naruto and they believer my group were the characters. We spent 2 hours playing the characters for these children it was amazing

I was shopping last year during Ramencon and was wearing my Mavis cosplay, well a little girl was in same area and looked at me with big eyes and said “Mommy is that Mavis?” the mother looked at me and looked down and started to explain it was a costume, I smiled showing fangs and bent close and told her “yes I am Mavis, but shhh all humans are not accepting yet.” the little girl got all smiles and happy and her mom giggled and smiled to me shaking my hand.

What is your cosplay horror story?

Cosplaying as Yoko and needless to say, cosplay malfunction and top came untied as I went to hug someone, thank goodness the person stayed in the hug when i whispered what had happened

Where do you see the art of Cosplay in the next 5-10 years?

Honestly I want to see it as more accepting of all types of cosplay and cosplayers, I want it to be less judgmental and less toxic. It is in some communities heading that way but in others it isnt. So truly I have not clue. I think it will be more in the public eye and slightly more “normal”WR
